Dedicated gluten-free restaurants are few and far between in Minnesota so dining out is a real treat, even if only fast food. According to Five Guys, the only gluten-containing items in their kitchens are the buns and a handful of milkshake mix-ins. The fries do not contain gluten and they have a dedicated fryer.

The potential for cross contact is an issue anytime there is gluten in the kitchen so be sure to tell them you have celiac disease and cannot be exposed to even trace amounts. A crew member will put “allergy” on the order and prepare the burger in a special area (confirm this when placing your order as procedures may vary from location to location).

I used my Nima Sensor to test my fries and burger bowl for hidden gluten. To do this, I rubbed the top of my testing capsule over the outside of the burger and toppings. I then put a pea-sized amount (combined) from both the burger and fries into the testing capsule.

The result was a smile, meaning no gluten was detected by the Nima Sensor. I was comfortable eating this meal, confident it was indeed celiac-safe.
