Until being diagnosed with celiac disease and forced to adopt a gluten-free diet, I hadn’t fully realized how much I relied on prepackaged foods – despite my passion for cooking! There are several debates within the celiac community, one of which concerns the safety of products lacking gluten-free labeling. Someone with celiac can be at risk of cross contact even when a product appears to have no gluten-containing ingredients. The product may generally be considered to be gluten-free but it’s gluten-free status has not been tested or verified.
This was the case with my favorite sloppy joe sauce. With my persistently positive serology, I had to avoid products that were not clearly identified gluten-free by the manufacturer. I was craving sloppy joes something fierce and needed to take matters into my own hands, this recipe is the result.
