Ali Edwards sparked a movement in January 2006 when she began the tradition of choosing a word for herself. She encouraged others to do the same as “a catalyst for enriching your life” and I followed suit shortly after. I struggled to remain focused during the first two years (“pursue” and “listen”) and consequently, very little growth took place. By the time year three rolled around, I realized I needed help and purchased a pendant to serve as a reminder.

It worked! Each word embodies a season of growth tangled up with bittersweet memories and moments of joy.
Choosing a word holds immense potential as a practice that inspires positive change. This simple yet profound act allows for introspection and intention-setting. It serves as a guide by shaping our thoughts, actions, and experiences throughout the year.

You may have noticed a recurring theme in your own life – a profound lesson that has your attention, a quality or experience you aspire to embody, or a specific goal you long to pursue. Taking the time to reflect on these observations and aspirations can significantly impact the direction of your journey in the coming year. Making a list and consulting a dictionary can be very helpful in choosing the perfect word. By carefully considering various words and their meanings, you can select one that resonates deeply with your hopes for the year ahead.
